More than fifty years ago the Fernandina Beach Airport annually was transformed into a very high speed racing circuit. It was on those very fast runways and taxiways of the World War II Army Air Corp training facility, here on Amelia Island, that so many Ferrari's, Porsches, and even a Bocar, in addition to so many other wonderful race cars of their eras where campaigned from 1961 through 1974, on the original and historic “Golden Crown Prix” circuit. Laid out on the very flat race course, with it's daunting, sweeping curves and razor sharp, hair pin turns, the “Golden Crown Prix” circuit was 2.3 miles in length. The likes of Roger Penske, in the Brundage Motors (Bru-mos) Porsche RS 60 Spyder, David Piper, from England, in the Ferrari GTO and Buck Fulp in the Ferrari 246 Dino SP set the front row of the 1962 event, on this circuit. Many famous drivers of the day, tested the wicked airport circuit, in hopes that their rides would be ready for the annual 12 Hours of Sebring event, two weeks later. Today, the “Golden Crown” airport circuit that you will be racing on is 2.1 miles in length, it is wonderfully smooth and in many places more than 100 feet wide, leading to bands of asphalt no more than 35 feet wide. The circuit is almost identical as the original course was. Seven major turns, two of which are hair pin turns, the Esses, and four chicanes make up the course. It is high speed, challenging and and yet will require a delicate touch to master the technical areas. Not only will pre-war GP car and Sports Cars from 1950 to around 1980 be competing, so will a band of early, vintage motorcycles. Some of which are pre-war, side mount, hand shifters. If that was not enough, how about adding a selection of vintage aircraft to the mix. Yes, it's an airport. So, the airport will have a fully functioning runway open for the restored vintage aircraft that will be landing during the event. They will both be on display and will do glorious fly overs, as well, during the racing event. If you have the desire, you too will be able climb aboard for a flight. That's not all. Yamaha is coming. They will be bring a current Moto GP bike, doing exhibition runs and will have their current ATV's available for trail rides, for the public. There will be a two day car and motorcycle show, A Motostalgia Automobile Auction, an evening's dinner that will seat up to 1,000 people and even the first annual “Amelia Island Pine Wood Championship” held at the festival's location. A race car tour to Historic downtown Fernandina Beach and much more! Oops, forgot, it's at THE BEACH! So, we will see you here in March, right!-->

Lodging on and around Amelia Island Lodging on and around Amelia Island for the Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix event March 17-20, 2016.
